The exterior brightwork on this Tayana 37 had suffered from years of neglected maintenance, resulting in severe UV exposure and water damage to the teak. With the varnish flaking and failing, the only effective solution was to return all of the exterior teak to bare wood and rebuild the finish from the ground up. After carefully protecting all surrounding surfaces, the deteriorated finish was carefully removed using heat guns, scrapers, and sanding.
Once stripped, the bare teak was hand-sanded to restore a clean, uniform surface in preparation for finishing. Working closely with the owner, we evaluated several finishing systems and selected Sikkens Cetol as the best balance of durability and ease of maintenance for their needs. The teak was first built up with four base coats of Sikkens Cetol Natural Teak, followed by four top coats of Cetol Clear Gloss to achieve a rich, glossy appearance with maximum UV protection.
